A Guelph man is facing charges following a fire at an apartment building early Thursday morning that sent a police officer to hospital.

Just after 2:30 a.m. the Guelph Police Service and the Guelph Fire Department were dispatched to an apartment fire at 33 Inverness Drive.

Officers were directed to a third floor apartment in the building where smoke was billowing out the door. The officers tried to gain entry but the door was locked. A male from the apartment was seen on the balcony throwing items to the ground.

The Guelph Fire Department began to fight the fire and officers evacuated the building. The male from the apartment tried to exit the building and was detained by police.

An officer was transported to the hospital and is being treated for smoke inhalation.

The investigation is ongoing, but a 36-year-old Guelph male has been charged with arson endangering life and will appear in bail court on Thursday morning.
